If you have not already heard, the Nintendo Switch has been the talk of the town as of late, as more people find themselves indulging in games while staying home during Covid-19. Even as Singapore transitions into Phase 2, there is no better time than now to get your hands dirty. What better way to reconnect with friends than with a game of Nintendo Switch? Here are our top picks of the 10 best Nintendo Switch games to play:
1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Take control of your very own island and customize it any way you like in the game of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Keep yourself busy by inviting villagers and growing your community, or craft your items using materials you can collect across the island. The incorporation of a more interactive aspect is a huge step-up from earlier editions of Animal Crossing. This game also has incredible graphics, with great attention being paid to small details, giving it a realistic touch. Moreover, this game has a multiplayer aspect to it where you can visit your friends’ islands and hang out whenever you like! Hands down the best Nintendo Switch game to play at the moment!
2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild calls for an adventure of a lifetime. Elements of exploration and gameplay blend together seamlessly. Aside from the main storyline, the game also provides players with the chance to complete side quests fight off monsters or explore the massive map on your own, offering a unique experience for all to enjoy. Be sure to be rewarded with free upgrades and better progression with more time and effort put into the game. With so many alternatives, it is no wonder this action-adventure game has won multiple awards when it was released back in 2017.
3. Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

One of Nintendo’s latest additions is the Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition – a remastered version that has managed to retain all its best elements yet introduce a few improvements that work. A new epilogue, enhanced visuals and updated soundtracks just make the game all the more enticing. It has a steep learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, it is sure to keep you occupied for hours on end. This might be the best action role-playing game of 2020 on the Nintendo Switch; if you were not already a fan of the game’s past instalments, you might be after this. All in all, one of the best Nintendo Switch games to play!
4. Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate

Super Smash Bros.™ Ultimate is the perfect game for both casual and competitive gamers. In a typical match in the game, battling opponents and scoring the most number of eliminations allows you to come out on top. Aside from going head to head with your friends in the multiplayer mode, you can also choose from a variety of game modes, such as the story or adventure mode. With access to the largest roster of characters yet (more than 70!) and over 100 stages worth of gameplay, there are so many things to do and explore. It is probably the most comprehensive game to date from the franchise and is definitely worth the price tag.
5. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Looking to have some fun with the family? The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can easily accommodate up to 4 players at a time on a single Switch screen, or 12 players in the online multiplayer mode. With a story mode and 5 other battle modes to choose from, the game is perfect for all ages and has something for everyone. The vibrant graphics are bound to capture your attention. It also has a fuss-free layout for navigation and easy to follow controls even for first-time gamers. This instalment of Mario Kart does not only include new race tracks but also features characters from other Nintendo games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild which makes it all the more exciting. You cannot go wrong with this game.
6. Ring Fit Adventure

Want to get a workout in without having to hit the gym? Ring Fit Adventure provides a fun and interactive way to do so through the incorporation of mini-games, leaving you feeling accomplished. The controller is also very responsive, allowing for pretty accurate monitoring of your heart rate and amount of calories burned. The game even provides hints on how to maintain the correct posture, which is helpful for beginners. If you are someone who has constantly put exercising on hold, this is an absolute game-changer. However, do note that the game is on the pricier side compared to other Nintendo Switch games since it comes with additional equipment in the set up that is necessary for gameplay.
7. Splatoon 2

Reminiscent of more classic games like Call of Duty is Splatoon 2, which takes on the formula of a shooter game but with no bloodshed. In the game, you can expect to fight off your opponents while trying to cover as much ground in the map – the winning team has to have a better paint-job done in their representative colour. The online multiplayer mode will keep you on your toes, but if you are keen on embarking on an adventure, do give the single-player campaign a go. There are a total of 5 worlds to choose from and 32 missions to complete. All in all, the game has a great storyline with sufficient game modes, giving you sufficient replay value.
8. Pokémon Sword & Shield

If you are looking for a refreshing take on the traditional Pokémon franchise, Pokémon Sword & Shield is just the game for you. It includes never seen before Pokémon and a new region, Galar, which is modelled after real-life places in the United Kingdom. Although the storyline is a little bit lacking compared to past titles, it does not lose its entertainment value. The game also allows you to connect with friends virtually. One of the setbacks for long-term Pokémon fans is the loss of the National Pokédex. However, do not let this hold you back, as the upcoming edition of the Expansion Pass (paid update) – inclusive of The Isle of Armor (just released) and The Crown Tundra (set to release later this year) are said to bring back old features of previous Pokémon instalments, including the National Pokédex. Overall, truly such a classic and definitely one of the best Nintendo Switch games to play.
9. Diablo III: Eternal Collection

Get ready to clock in hours on end of insane combat, looting and character progression as you fight your way through dungeons alone or with friends. Diablo III: Eternal Collection is yet another role-playing game with access to a various class, armour and a variety of weapons. The game has managed to retain a decent resolution with high frame rates despite porting over from its PC version. Although the game does lack opportunities for exploration, the ability to seamlessly transition between the online and local play still provides for immersive player experience.
10. Overcooked! 2

Playing with friends? Be it a team effort or against one another, cooking has never been this fun! Do not be fooled by the cartoony graphics – this game is actually rather fast-paced and involves a lot of strategizing. An improvement from the first instalment, Overcooked! 2 has been deliberately made more challenging and includes new and improved recipes that are sure to cause chaos. You will be glad to know that the characters now have the ability to toss ingredients across the kitchen, which fundamentally changes the gameplay. Be sure to try this one out for yourself! Definitely one of the best Nintendo Switch games to play in my opinion!
