We found the Best-Tasting Mooncake in Singapore 2022; from a Blind Taste Test!
The Mid-Autumn Festival is already around the corner, which means it is finally time to feast on mooncakes!
Every year, bakeries, hotels and cafes create a variety of delicious mooncakes that leave us all overwhelmed with choices.
But fret not, because here at BestinSingapore.com, we conducted a blind taste test of Singapore’s best mooncakes – to find the best mooncake of them all!
Methodology – Finding the King of All Mooncakes
For this blind taste test, we sourced for new and interesting mooncake flavors and narrowed down to the 8 most unique mooncakes in Singapore!
We narrowed down to these top 8 participants: Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium, Kele, Aroma Truffle, Swensen’s, The Durian Bakery, Ding Mooncake, Baker’s Brew and Andaz Singapore!
With blindfolds on, 19 employees at BestinSingapore.com tried each mooncake and gave ratings according to the taste.
After collating the results, we are pleased to announce that the “Best Tasting Mooncake” award in Singapore 2022 goes to… *drumrolls please*… The Durian Bakery’s Black Thorn Durian Mooncake!
Winner: The Durian Bakery’s Black Thorn Durian Mooncake
The Best-Tasting Mooncake of 2022
It was a unanimous decision that The Durian Bakery’s Black Thorn Durian Mooncake deserves the title of the Best-Tasting Mooncake of 2022!
This was by far the best durian mooncake I ever tried before, with each bite bringing delightful flavors to my palate; bittersweet, rich, creamy and a slight alcoholic taste! Together with the soft, chewy snow skin, this combination is definitely a match made in heaven! You have to try it yourself to believe it!
These mooncakes went far beyond all our expectations and we definitely indulged ‘The Richest Durian Experience’. Upon tasting the mooncake, our staff knew that the mooncake had durian fillings in it, but it tasted so different from the normal classic durian mooncakes that we were left in awe! We could tell that they were using premium quality durians in their mooncake!
Not to our surprise, The Durian Bakery was using an extremely rare and exquisite Black Thorn Durian, sourced from 2018’s Durian World Champion, Serene Orchard. The Black Thorn is so rare that it has a waiting time of 2 years in some places! With only 200 boxes available in Singapore, we were glad that we got the chance to try such an extravagant flavor! With such a unique and impressive flavor, there is no doubt that The Durian Bakery deserves 1st place in this blind taste test!

Coming in at a close second is The Avocado Macadamia by Kele Bakery! Due to the overwhelming response, the all-time best seller is back in stock this year! One bite of the mooncake gave the perfect blend of creamy avocado with crunchy macadamia nuts! It was such a refreshing taste and all the staff couldn’t help but go for more! Also, upon having these mooncakes, we did not feel too guilty about snacking too much because The Avocado feels nutritious and healthy!
3. Aroma Truffle | Truffle-Infused Mao Shan Wang Durian Mooncakes
Putting truffle in different dishes has been an on-going trend in Singapore and it is safe to say that most locals love it! At Aroma Truffle, their vision is to bring an authentic Italian experience to the rest of the world. Other than Aroma Truffle chips and popcorn, they now offer a very unique mooncake! Their mooncakes are enhanced with a luxurious combination of local’s favorite flavors; Mao Shan Wang Durian and truffle infused snowskin!
We could taste the rich and creamy Mao Shan Wang together with the exquisite flavor of truffle and it really suited our palate. Who knew this combination would be so good! ‘Spoil yourself with this lavish treat, and feast like royalty!’
4. Ding Mooncake | 2022 New Snowskin Mooncakes
Award-winning Ding Mooncake has spent 2 years conducting R&D to perfect their snowskin mooncake flavors. During the blind taste test, the staff had a taste of their newest edition: Korean Yuzu Snowskin Mooncake, Authentic Gula Melaka Snowskin Mooncake, French Earl Gray Lavender Snowskin Mooncake, as well as Treviso Tiramisu Snowskin Mooncake.
We all loved the mixture of flavors and the texture of the snowskin! As a coffee lover, I would say my favorite would be the Treviso Tiramisu Snowskin Mooncake! It sounds like a strange combination; tiramisu and mooncake, but the taste definitely surprised me and I couldn’t stop eating it! It was creamy, bittersweet and rich!
5. Andaz Singapore | 5 on 25 Signature Tea Blend
With a total of 6 baked mooncakes, Andaz Singapore had managed to surprise us with their exclusive flavors: Teh Gao Siew Dai, Ruby Pandan and 5 on 25’s Signature Tea Blend. If you are a tea lover, their mooncakes would definitely hit the right spot!
Most of our staff love to order milk tea during lunch breaks and during this blind taste test, it was a unanimous decision that we loved Teh Gao Siew Dai the best! It was a perfect combination of milk tea, rich lotus paste and crunchy almond flakes, a flavor that us locals are familiar with!
6. Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium | Assorted Mini Snowskin Mooncakes
Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant came up with new flavors this year, ranging from fruity flavors to alcoholic ones! We got the Assorted Mini Snowskin Mooncakes bundle which consisted of different flavors: Peranakan Durian, Rum & Raisin Praline, Lychee Martini Praline, Soursop Paste with Dragon Fruit, Pandan Paste with Champagne Praline and Green Tea Paste with Chrysanthemum Praline.
The staff all loved the alcohol infused mooncakes especially the Rum & Raisin Praline Snowskin Mooncake as the plump rum-soaked raisins were right up our alley! The Lychee Martini was our next favorite because of the sweet taste with a slight tart finish.
7. Baker’s Brew | Assorted Set
In 2022, Baker’s Brew presents The Louvelle Collection, consisting of 4 handcrafted mooncakes. The set features the Traditional Single Yolk Baked Mooncake, Ispahan Baked Mooncake, Black Sesame Baked Mooncake and Japanese Red Bean Citrus Baked Mooncake.
The mooncakes from Baker’s Brew had a very earthy and savory taste, leaning more towards the familiar taste of classic traditional mooncakes. The Ispahan Baked Mooncake came as a surprise, with a fruity taste of lychee-infused lotus paste while the Traditional Single Yolk Baked Mooncake tasted like the classic all-time favorite mooncake.
8. Swensen’s | Mochi Snowskin Ice Cream Mooncake
Swensen’s is famous for their ice cream creations and for this year’s Mid Autumn Festival, they are selling mochi-snowkin Ice Cream Mooncakes! Just thinking about ice cream fillings wrapped in chewy snowskin would surely leave one mouthwatering! Who could resist these creamy and chewy cold treats?
All our staff love ice cream and this came as a delight to all of us! There were 4 flavors: Sticky Chewy Chocolate, Cookies ‘N’ Cream, Durian King (D24) and Chempedak. The flavors were not very unique, but we sure loved a yummy cold dessert that comes in the form of a mooncake!
After the blind taste test, our mooncake cravings were all satisfied. There was one mooncake which left a really deep impression, The Durian Bakery’s Black Thorn Durian Mooncake.
We felt that their Black Thorn Durian mooncake was unlike any other durian mooncakes tasted before! It was a unanimous decision that this was the most unique and best tasting durian mooncake that we tried so far. No wonder the Black Thorn Durian won an award in the Durian World Championship in 2018! Each mooncake also consists of 48g of pure award-winning Black Thorn, the highest ratio content in the market!
